JOCHEN MASS
Jochen was born just outside Munich in September 1946. Growing up in Mannheim, near the infamous Hockenheim Race track, racing was inevitable. But driving his mother's VW Beetle at the early age of 14, he felt that he had the talent to outpace all his friends and that driving was a natural thing for him to do.
He started working for an Alfa Romeo dealership in 1967 and after a short period managed to persuade the owner to let him race his 1600cc Alfa GTA.
Racing against the factory team of Ford Germany, Jochen was offered a contract to race for Ford from 1970 to 1976. This produced titles in the 1971 German championship, the European championship in 1972, and also winning the 24 Hrs of Spa Franchorchamps with Hans Stuck. During his first Monoposto race in 1971, he quickly progressed into Formula One and went on to compete in 105 GP races and a further 15 non-championship Formula One races (Surtees, Mclaren, ATS, Arrows and March). Although he managed to win only one GP race (1975 Spanish Grand Prix), he was a regular front runner and team-mate of Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt. Parallel to Formula One, Jochen raced prototype sports cars from 1970 to 1991. He was contracted to race for Porsche from 1976 to 1987, competing in 14 Le Mans 24 Hours events, the Daytona 24 Hours, securing a win in Sebring with Bobby Rahal in 1987 (in Bruce Leven's 962 Porsche), and winning the World Endurance championship several times. He then was offered to drive for the Mercedes Sauber team from 1988 to 1991. Under the guidance of Jochen Neerpasch, three young and very talented drivers were added to the team to share the car with Jochen. Those drivers where Michael Schumacher, H.H. Frentzen, and Karl Wendlinger. All three made it into Formula One and the rest is history. During the 1980's, Jochen competed in IMSA and IROC events in the U.S.A. and helped to develop the Porsche Indy-car, which unfortunately never raced. Winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1989 for Sauber Mercedes with Dickens and Reuter was a late highlight in his career. Late in 1991, Group C Racing was taken out of the race calendar. Jochen owned a Saloon-Car Team, competing very successfully in the German Touring-Car Championship until the end of 1992.
From 1993 to 1999 Jochen provided the commentary for Formula One races for German Broadcaster RTL and ZDF. Mercedes continues to retain Jochen as a decorated race driver for the frequent outings of their beautiful vintage GP-cars, as well as to run the fabulous 722 SLR of Sterling Moss and SSK's in the Retro Mille Miglias in Italy. Jochen currently lives in Monte Carlo with his wife and four children.
